Varkaus

Early inhabitation reached the Varkaus region in the late 15th century. Even before that, huntsmen had travelled in the region and used the narrow passage, where Varkaus is now located, to enter the hunting grounds. In more recent times, central location along road 5 and the Saimaa deep canal have created preconditions for traffic and increasing commerce and industry.

In 1962, Varkaus borough was officially made a town. The lively little town is today a home for over 23,000 people. Varkaus is a safe, vital and economically stable town, where environment and pluralistic culture is cherished.
