|Punkaharju's sceneries have charmed visitors for centuries. The czar of Russia, Alexander I became so infatuated with Punkaharju in 1803 that he ordered the whole region to be protected. The unique nature has indeed stayed clean and unspoiled up to our time.
One of the largest art centres in the Nordic countries, Retretti, is located in Punkaharju, as well as Lusto, the Finnish Forest Museum and information centre. Children particularly like the Kesämaa water park with lots of fun things to do. Beautiful surroundings of Punkaharju are an inspiration to active people. You can go hiking, canoeing or cycling. Finland's national poet, Runeberg, was also inspired by the lovely eskers.
